The Oakland art scene isn’t confined to galleries. Artists and their creations can often be found at pop-up events, street fairs and on display in local shops.
Oakland-based Stephanie Hatch, who can be found in all of these places, recently opened a show at Resurrect Oakland (https://www.facebook.com/resurrectdesigns).
Hatch, who is critical of pop culture women’s magazines, creates work that seeks to redefine unrealistic beauty standards while exploring identity, femininity and sexuality. Her mixed media collages, a portion of which are on display at Resurrect, incorporate photography, ink and gouache.
While Hatch’s current collages don’t focus on specific people, Hatch plans to begin featuring portraits of women she knows and incorporating their stories into her upcoming mixed media work. This is something she already enjoys exploring in her photography, much of which features black and white, double exposure portraits of her best friends in nature.
